چکیده
Exact results were found for a simple lattice model of aggregation in which masses diffuse and coalesce upon contact with rate 1 and every nonzero mass chips off a single unit of mass to a randomly chosen neighbour with rate w. The dynamics conserves the average mass density ρ and in the stationary state the system undergoes a nonequilibrium phase transition in the (ρ − w) plane across a critical line ρc(w). The phase diagram was calculated analytically in arbitrary spatial dimensions and shown to be independent of dimension. Direct and indirect numerical evidence strongly suggests that the mean field asymptotic answer for the single site mass distribution function and the associated critical exponents are independent of dimension. It was shown that the model of straight hard rod with only hard core interactions, the prototypical model of nematic liquids, shows a second phase transition from the nematic to disordered phase, as the density of rods is increased. The generic behaviour of sandpile models with sticky grains was studied using much longer simulations than before, showing that these are in the universality class ...

A number of systems composed of hard objects on continuous lines were studied for their tendency to order with increasing density, by mapping to equivalent systems of classical interacting spins. A system of disks centred on either of two close-by parallel lines was shown to map exactly to a 1-D antiferromagnetic model, needle-like objects on a line mapped to Ising-like models, and objects with...

A variational formulation of the d-wave superconducting ground state and low-lying excitations in doped Mott insulators was developed building on early resonating valence bond ideas of P. W, Anderson. Analytical approximation schemes were developed to gain further insights into our recent variational Monte Carlo results. The effect of disorder on a two-dimensional Mott insulator was studied and...

A important open question in this field has been the question of classification of different universality classes of sandpile models. Since the avalanche activity in sandpile models can grow, diffuse and die, they fall the general class of reaction diffusion systems. It is expected to fall in the universality class of active-inactive transition with many absorbing states. It was shown that the ...

Patterns produced by adding grains at a single site on a flat substrate in sandpile models provide nice examples of complex patterns produced from simple deterministic local nonlinear evolution rules. The authors have earlier studied some of the patterns in abelian sandpile models on the two-dimensional Manhattan lattice and the F-lattice. These results were extended to the case with multiple s...
